Leader of the Opposition Hon. Inia Seruiratu has strongly condemned the recent desecration of the Samabula Shiv Mandir, calling it “an affront to the values that bind us as one people.”

In a statement issued today, Seruiratu said the act of vandalism was not merely a crime, but an attack on the moral foundation of Fiji’s multi-faith society.

“The desecration of the Samabula Shiv Mandir is not just a crime, it is an affront to the values that bind us as one people,” he said. “In Fiji, we believe in respect, in dignity, and in living side by side as brothers and sisters, regardless of race, religion or colour.”

Seruiratu stressed that every Fijian deserves the right to worship in peace and that any act which violates that peace must be met with more than just condemnation.

“We must respond with more than condemnation, we must lead by example. Leadership demands moral clarity. Let our words reflect our values, and our actions affirm the sacredness of every faith,” he said.

He offered solidarity to Fiji’s Hindu community, affirming that their pain is shared by many across all religious and ethnic backgrounds.

“To our Hindu community, your pain is real, and your grief is shared. I stand with you, as do countless Fijians across all faiths who recognize this act for what it is, a betrayal of who we are.”

Citing Christian teachings, Seruiratu added: “As Jesus taught, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ That commandment is not just a religious teaching, it is a foundation for how we must live together.”

He urged Fijians to use the incident as a moment of reflection and unity.

“Let this tragedy be a turning point, a moment where we choose unity over division, humanity over hatred, and respect over intolerance,” Seruiratu said.
