Opposition MP Ketan Lal has challenged the Coalition Government to clarify its intentions regarding proposed changes to the 2013 Constitution, questioning whether the amendments are aimed at strengthening democracy or consolidating power.
Speaking in Parliament, Lal accused the government of failing to fulfill its election promises, leaving many Fijians frustrated and disillusioned.
He called for transparency and accountability, emphasizing that any attempt to amend the Constitution must be met with strong opposition to protect the rights of the people.
“The people of Fiji deserve transparency, not just empty promises and power grabs,” Lal stated.
He also criticized the government for continuously blaming the previous administration, instead of focusing on solutions to pressing national issues.
Lal argued that FijiFirst had left behind a foundation for economic growth and infrastructure development, which has since been neglected.
Additionally, he challenged the Minister for Public Works to provide evidence of progress made under the ministry’s large budget allocation, demanding answers on the status of key projects.
Lal also addressed Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, warning that complacency is the greatest threat to democracy.
He urged leaders to prioritize action over rhetoric, ensuring that governance remains fair, transparent, and accountable.
