Opposition Member of Parliament, Premila Kumar has expressed concerns over the recently approved 2025 sitting calendar, particularly regarding the short amount of time allocated for the national budget debate.

Kumar criticized the decision to schedule just one week for the budget debate, calling it "unacceptable" and questioning why the time was reduced.

She pointed out that the budget affects businesses, agencies, and the people, and that MPs should be given more time to discuss it.

"Why is our speaking time reduced? Previously, we were given two weeks for the budget debate," Kumar said.

She also raised concerns about the overall sitting calendar, noting that Parliament will not be in session for almost three months.

Kumar suggested that Parliament should start its sittings a month earlier instead of waiting until February.

"Last year, we were told the delay was due to renovations. Now that everything is in order, why can't Parliament open earlier?" she asked, stressing the importance of setting an example for the country.

Assistance Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, also pointed out that the calendar includes a nearly two-month break, which she said could delay important work, including bills, annual reports, and committee reports.

She urged committee chairs to ensure that work is completed promptly.

However, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, defended the calendar, explaining that it was agreed upon by the Business Committee.

He assured that there will be ample time for MPs to debate the budget, pointing out that the March sittings will allow members to discuss important bills and reports.
