Pacific youth invited to help shape climate action ahead of COP31
FIJI NEWSTOP STORIES

Pacific young people are being encouraged to take an active role in shaping the region's climate future, with Fiji reaffirming its commitment to ensuring youth voices are at the forefront of preparations for the Pacific-led Pre-COP and COP31.
The call comes following a meeting in Suva between Minister for Environment and Climate Change Hon. Lynda Tabuya and COP31 Presidency Youth Climate Champion Sally Higgins.
Ms Higgins, who was appointed by the Australia–Türkiye COP31 Presidency, is responsible for ensuring the voices of children and young people are meaningfully represented in climate discussions and decision-making leading up to COP31.
During the meeting, Hon. Tabuya said Fiji, as host of the Pacific-led Pre-COP, is committed to giving Pacific adolescents and young people a genuine opportunity to influence regional and international climate discussions.
"The future of climate action must be shaped with children and young people, not just for them. Their voices, ideas and lived experiences are essential to building a more resilient and sustainable Pacific," she said.
Ms Higgins said young people should be recognised as partners in developing climate solutions rather than simply being consulted.
"Young people don't just want a seat at the table; they need to help shape the agenda," she said.
The discussions also highlighted the upcoming Pre-COP Australia and Pacific Youth Climate Dialogue, which will be held in Nadi from 1 to 3 October 2026.
The dialogue will bring together young leaders from across the Pacific and beyond to exchange ideas, showcase Pacific-led climate solutions and develop recommendations that will help inform discussions at both the Pacific-led Pre-COP and COP31.
Ms Higgins' visit reflects the shared commitment between Fiji and the COP31 Presidency to strengthen youth engagement across the Pacific and ensure the next generation plays a central role in addressing climate change.
Young people interested in participating in the dialogue are encouraged to submit an application through the official registration portal.
