Parliament has officially passed the Anti-Doping Bill 2024, a new law aimed at ensuring fair play and the well-being of athletes in the nation.

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, emphasized the importance of the Bill, stating that it addresses the evolving challenges of doping in sports and aims to create a level playing field for all competitors.

Saukuru highlighted that as sports continue to change, so do the tactics of those trying to gain an unfair advantage. He stressed the need for regulations that protect athletes and uphold the integrity of sports in Fiji.

However, not all members of Parliament are in full support of the Bill.

Opposition MP, Parveen Bala, expressed concerns, describing the legislation as "undeveloped" and pointing out its narrow focus on doping.

He argued that it fails to address other critical issues in sports, such as player welfare and corruption, which he believes are part of a larger crisis affecting the industry.

In contrast, Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, praised the Bill as essential for Fiji's commitment to fair play and good sportsmanship.

He noted that passing the legislation is vital for maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving sports landscape.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica called the Bill a historic step for Fiji's sports sector, emphasizing its role in safeguarding young athletes.

Another Opposition MP, Premila Kumar, acknowledged the necessity of the Bill but insisted that it requires significant revisions before it can be fully supported.

As the country moves forward with this legislation, the debate continues over the best approach to ensure the integrity and fairness of sports in Fiji.
