Passport colour does not determine nationality, Immigration Ministry clarifies

The Ministry of Immigration is reminding the public that the colour of a passport cover does not, by itself, determine a person’s nationality, the country that issued the document, its passport category or its authenticity.

The clarification comes following the circulation of images of passports and other travel documents on social media and public platforms, where only the cover colour may be visible without enough information to accurately identify the document.

The Ministry says Fiji is among countries that issue passports with blue covers, while different colours are assigned to specific categories of Fijian passports.

An ordinary Fijian passport has a blue cover, while diplomatic passports are red and official passports are black. Emergency passports also have a blue cover.

The Ministry says a Fijian passport should be identified using several features, including the country of issue, passport type, information contained in the document and its security features.

It is also urging members of the public to exercise caution when sharing passport images online.

Passports contain sensitive personal information, and the Ministry advises against publicly sharing clear images or copies where details such as passport numbers, dates of birth, photographs, signatures or other identifying information are visible.

Anyone with concerns about the authenticity or validity of a Fijian passport is advised to contact the Ministry of Immigration for proper verification.

The Ministry says it remains committed to protecting the integrity and security of Fiji’s travel documents and is encouraging the public to rely on official communication channels for accurate information on passport and immigration matters.
