People are Fiji's Main Asset Says Nemani

The Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Mr. Maritino Nemani, has called on all employers to show compassion and flexibility as Fiji recovers from the recent cyclone.
“Some workers may return unaffected, but others may have lost their homes, livelihoods or have been impacted in some other way. We ask employers to be understanding, offering flexible arrangements or leave where needed,” Mr. Nemani said.
Mr. Nemani also urged employees to be honest with their employers about their circumstances and to communicate openly where they are facing genuine difficulties returning to work.
He stressed that before resuming operations, businesses must ensure workplaces are safe and meet Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.
“No employee should be asked to work in unsafe conditions. Employers must take the necessary steps to ensure that workplaces are safe before asking staff to return,” he said.
Mr. Nemani reminded that people remain the most valuable resource for businesses and the country as a whole.
“Buildings, equipment and infrastructure can always be rebuilt, but people are the true strength of our workplaces and our nation. This is something we must never forget, especially in times like these.”
The Ministry will continue to support both workers and employers during this recovery period to ensure fair treatment and safe workplaces.
