Pillay Emerging as One of Fiji's Leading Legal Minds
FIJI NEWS

If you have been following some of Fiji's biggest legal stories in recent years, chances are you have come across the name Wasu Pillay.
Most recently, Pillay was part of the defence team representing former Amalgamated Telecom Holdings and Telecom Fiji director Sanjay Kaba in a closely watched FICAC prosecution. In a significant victory for the defence, the Magistrates Court upheld a "No Case to Answer" application and acquitted Kaba of the charge of obtaining a financial advantage.
The case attracted national attention due to Kaba's standing in Fiji's corporate sector and the nature of the allegations. Pillay's involvement in the successful defence further cemented his growing reputation as a lawyer capable of handling complex and high-profile litigation.
But the Kaba matter is only the latest chapter in what has become an increasingly prominent legal career.
As managing partner of Gordon & Co., one of Fiji's most established law firms, Pillay has emerged as one of the country's most recognisable legal figures. Based in Lautoka, he has built a practice spanning commercial litigation, property disputes, corporate advisory work and judicial review proceedings.
Over the years, he has also been involved in major commercial disputes involving businesses, investors and property interests, earning a reputation for handling technically complex matters that often carry significant financial and commercial implications.
Away from the courtroom, Pillay has established himself as a respected voice within Fiji's business community.
In 2022, he was elected President of the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, becoming one of the youngest business leaders to hold the position recently.
Those who know him describe a lawyer equally comfortable arguing legal points before the courts as he is discussing investment, economic development and business confidence with industry leaders.
While many lawyers spend their careers working quietly behind the scenes, Pillay's increasing involvement in headline-making cases has seen his public profile continue to grow.
From major corporate litigation to nationally significant court proceedings, Wasu Pillay is rapidly becoming a household name within Fiji's legal profession, one whose influence appears set to grow even further in the years ahead.
