Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has issued an apology to the Hindu community following the desecration of the Samabula Shiv Mandir in Suva.
“It was very sad, it is unfortunate and unacceptable, and I apologise on behalf of all non-Hindus,” Rabuka said.
He condemned the act as deeply irresponsible and unrepresentative of any faith. “If we are blamed for that, that is not the action of a responsible Christian or any other responsible member of any other faith,” he stated.
Rabuka went on to reference the teachings of Jesus Christ, reminding the nation of the core Christian value of empathy and respect: “The Christian Bible is very, very pointed on its teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ, who said, do unto others as you would like them to do unto you.”
The Prime Minister’s comments come amid growing calls for unity and respect across all communities in Fiji, following the shocking incident which has drawn widespread condemnation.
