Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has commended the dedication of Fijian farmers and the role of private sector partnerships in driving agricultural growth during the British American Tobacco (BAT) Fiji Star Farmer Awards held in Nadi.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister emphasised that agriculture remains a cornerstone of Fiji’s development, supporting food security, employment, and income generation for rural communities. He said the Government’s vision is to transform the sector into a modern, resilient, and high-performing contributor to the economy.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector, noting that initiatives such as the BAT Star Farmer Programme demonstrate how investment, training, and innovation can improve productivity and livelihoods.

Since its establishment in 2022, the programme has trained more than 600 farmers in agronomy and modern farming techniques, promoting sustainable practices and helping farmers adapt to evolving challenges, including climate impacts.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the Government’s broader economic target of achieving at least 6 per cent annual GDP growth through increased investment, improved productivity, and expanded export opportunities.

The highlight of the event was the recognition of Gold Star Farmer of the Year, Daya Nand of Koronubu, Ba. A farmer with decades of experience, Mr Nand has diversified his operations across tobacco, sugarcane, vegetables, rice, cattle, and goat farming, demonstrating strong resilience and innovation.

Producing up to 16 tonnes of tobacco annually from one and a half acres, Mr Nand has also benefited from technical support and access to farming inputs, which have contributed to improved yields and income.

A total of 90 farmers were recognised at this year’s awards, including six platinum, 12 gold, and 72 silver recipients, reflecting the growing reach and impact of the programme.

BAT Fiji General Manager James Goldring said the initiative continues to support farmers with the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to succeed, while contributing to rural development and national economic growth.
