Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka met with French President Emmanuel Macron today on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York.

The two leaders reaffirmed Fiji and France’s commitment to strengthening their partnership in areas of mutual interest.

Their brief meeting took place during the side event on the High Seas Treaty, also known as the BBNJ Treaty. The treaty, which focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, officially crossed the ratification threshold last week, meaning it will now enter into force.

Fiji has been a strong supporter of the treaty, recognising the Pacific region’s deep reliance on a healthy ocean for livelihoods, food security, and sustainable development. Prime Minister Rabuka reiterated Fiji’s call for ambitious global action to ensure the fair and sustainable use of marine resources.
