Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has officially opened the new Asian Development Bank (ADB) Pacific Subregional Office in Suva, saying the move will strengthen regional cooperation and development across the Pacific.

The new office is located at the Fijian Holdings Building in Suva and marks a major step in deepening the partnership between Fiji, Pacific Island countries, and the Asian Development Bank.

Rabuka officiated at the opening ceremony alongside ADB President Masato Kanda, describing the establishment of the office as a renewed commitment to regional engagement and sustainable development.

He said the new office represents more than just a physical presence.

“Today’s opening is more than the unveiling of a new office. It represents a renewed commitment and a shared vision for a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable Pacific region,” Rabuka said.

The Prime Minister highlighted Fiji’s long-standing cooperation with ADB, pointing to major investments in transport, renewable energy, water and sanitation, and climate resilience. He also acknowledged the Bank’s support following Cyclone Winston and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rabuka said the strengthened ADB presence in Fiji will improve coordination and responsiveness to the needs of Pacific Island countries, which face challenges such as geographic isolation, small market size and climate vulnerability.

ADB President Masato Kanda reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to Fiji and the region, describing Fiji as a key partner and an important hub for regional cooperation.

Kanda said ADB’s support has focused on emergency response, long-term resilience and private sector development to promote sustainable and inclusive growth across the Pacific.

The new Pacific Subregional Office is expected to support development priorities including climate finance, private sector growth, digital transformation, improved connectivity and resilient infrastructure.

Rabuka also emphasised the serious impact of climate change on Pacific nations and welcomed ADB’s continued support for climate action and energy transition.

The establishment of the office signals a new phase of cooperation between ADB and Pacific Island countries aimed at strengthening economic resilience and supporting sustainable development across the region.
