Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has praised the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI) for its 100-year contribution to Fiji’s growth, describing the organisation as a key pillar of unity, education, and community service.
Speaking at the Sangam’s centennial Annual General Convention at King Charles Park in Nadi, Mr Rabuka said the organisation’s legacy shows that national strength is built by people who serve others.
“For 100 years, the Sangam has demonstrated that national resilience is built not by institutions alone, but by people who step forward in service,” he said.
“By strengthening communities through action rather than words, it has reminded us that a united Fiji is sustained by everyday acts of care, responsibility, and shared duty.”
Mr Rabuka highlighted the Sangam’s major role in education, noting its wide reach across the country.
“Today, the Sangam manages 21 primary schools, five secondary schools, 18 early childhood centres, and the TISI Sangam College of Nursing in Labasa, serving more than 10,000 students nationwide.
“This reflects not only its reach, but also the trust it has earned, as these institutions remain open and inclusive to all.”
He said the organisation has helped produce generations of skilled and principled citizens.
“It has affirmed a lasting truth: that education is the one form of wealth that cannot be diminished.”
Beyond education, Mr Rabuka said the Sangam has consistently stepped up during times of hardship.
“In times of hardship, the Sangam has responded promptly and compassionately, showing that the true measure of a community lies in how it cares for its most vulnerable.”
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister urged young people to carry forward the Sangam’s legacy.
“You inherit not only a proud legacy, but a responsibility — to use your education, skills, and values to advance our nation.”
As Guest of Honour, Mr Rabuka later ignited the centennial Sangam flame, symbolising the organisation’s past and future.
TISI President and Member of Parliament Praveen Kumar Bala said the flame represents a guiding light for future generations.
He also paid tribute to founder Sadhu Kuppuswamy and reflected on the organisation’s beginnings in Nadi in 1926.
The centennial celebrations, linked to the Shri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple, will continue with prayers, cultural events, sports, and community activities.
