Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka today received a courtesy call from Mr. Toily Kurbanov, Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, at the Office of the Prime Minister in Suva.

Mr. Kurbanov was accompanied by the United Nations Resident Coordinator to Fiji, Mr. Dirk Wagener, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, Ms. Munktuya Altangarel.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Rabuka warmly welcomed the delegation on behalf of the Government and people of Fiji. He commended the UNV programme for its enduring commitment to sustainable development in the Pacific, particularly in building climate change resilience and empowering local communities.

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for the longstanding partnership between Fiji and the UNV, noting the positive impact of volunteerism in advancing national development priorities.

“We value the role of volunteerism in helping our communities adapt and grow. Strengthening our collaboration with the UNV is essential in addressing shared challenges like climate change, youth engagement, and capacity-building,” Rabuka said.

In response, Mr. Kurbanov thanked the Prime Minister for his hospitality and reaffirmed the UNV’s commitment to supporting Fiji and the broader Pacific region. He emphasised the role of volunteerism as a transformative force for peace and sustainable development.

“Volunteerism is a powerful way to engage people in development. It strengthens communities and accelerates progress,” Mr. Kurbanov said.

Based in Bonn, Germany, the UNV operates in 169 countries. In 2023, it deployed over 12,600 volunteers globally. The organisation maintains a strong presence through regional hubs and field units, including in the Pacific.

Mr. Kurbanov, who is originally from Russia, has served as Executive Coordinator of UNV since January 2021. He brings more than 25 years of experience in public policy and sustainable development, having held senior roles within UNDP and previously served as Deputy Resident Representative in Fiji from 2007 to 2012.

He holds master’s degrees in Public Administration from Harvard University and in Economics from the Russian Economic University.
