Police Checkpoints Causing Fuel Waste and Traffic Chaos, says Lal

Traffic congestion caused by Police checkpoints is leading to significant fuel waste, with thousands of vehicles left idling for extended periods across key routes, says the head of Dialogue Fiji, Nilesh Lal.
"At Laqere, traffic is backing up past Valelevu along Kings Road and stretching toward the Coca-Cola factory on Ratu Dovi Road, with long queues of vehicles burning fuel while waiting to pass through," Lal said.
"Drivers are often delayed for lengthy periods before reaching the checkpoint, only to be waved through, raising questions about the effectiveness of the current system."
Lal says the situation is creating unnecessary bottlenecks and placing added strain on fuel consumption at a time when global fuel uncertainty remains.
He also pointed to broader concerns around traffic management, noting that even minor accidents can result in prolonged disruptions due to delays in clearing roads.
Mr Lal questioned whether more efficient systems, including the use of technology, could be introduced to better manage congestion and reduce unnecessary delays.
He added that the current approach is causing frustration for motorists and an avoidable economic impact through wasted time and fuel.
“We can do better than this,” Lal said.
