Police Increase Patrols, Target Loitering

Police officers have stepped up patrols and are searching individuals moving in a suspicious manner or loitering in public places, in line with the intent of Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu.
Officers are also monitoring known hangout spots, particularly abandoned properties, as part of routine policing efforts.
Commissioner Tudravu said these actions reflect the basics of policing, which include visibility, asking questions, and clearing people who have no valid reason for being in certain locations.
“We want to encourage these youths to better utilise their time as often we receive reports that they are harassing others,” he said.
The Commissioner stressed that community support is key to the success of this approach.
“It goes back to community support as it is about keeping our communities safe. We want to encourage positive engagement with our youth beyond the negatives, and it can be done if we work together to ensure their focus is redirected to activities that are beneficial in their young lives,” Commissioner Tudravu said.
He also acknowledged the support of Crime Prevention Committees, which he said are selflessly assisting police through community-based approaches to crime prevention.
“Community-centered approach is the way forward. We know that the support is there from the communities, and we see it with the Crime Prevention Committees and neighbourhood watch zones. If we combine our efforts we can curb crime,” he said.
