Police Raise Alarm Over Fake News Circulation on Social Media
FIJI NEWS

The Fiji Police Force has voiced deep concern over the growing spread of fake news and misinformation on social media, warning that such content is provoking hate speech and misleading the public.
In a statement issued today, Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said the misuse of social media is a serious issue, particularly with the alarming trend of fabricated stories being shared under the guise of legitimate news from mainstream media outlets.
“Social media has changed the way we interact, and not always for the better,” Commissioner Tudravu said. “While we understand that the platform has become a popular source of information, users must take time to carefully distinguish between accurate information and fake news before sharing.”
He urged the public to be cautious and verify the authenticity of online posts, especially those from questionable sources. He also confirmed that the Fiji Police Force is collaborating with the Online Safety Commission to identify and investigate individuals who deliberately fabricate content with the intent to mislead or incite division.
The Police Force’s Criminal Investigations Department’s Digital Forensics team has received reports of such fake news circulating online. Investigations are underway, and statements are expected to be recorded soon.
Authorities warn that those found responsible for spreading disinformation with malicious intent will be held accountable under existing laws.
