The Fiji Police Force has raised alarm over the growing trend of racism and hate speech on social media, warning that such behaviour is having serious consequences for individuals and communities.

Authorities said while many Fijians use digital platforms positively for education and entertainment, a concerning rise in hateful comments is targeting people based on their ethnicity, religion, or social status. Police described these attacks as “intolerable exchanges” that undermine social cohesion.

“The implications of these negative posts on our society cannot be ignored,” the statement said. “We are particularly concerned about the rise in hateful comments against individuals, where one’s ethnicity, religion or status is used to fuel division and abuse.”

The Force also expressed disappointment at those who encourage harmful content by supporting and financially rewarding creators, giving them reason to continue spreading divisive material.

Police are urging social media users to exercise restraint and consider the psychological and social impacts their words may have on families, communities, and the nation as a whole.

“Such impacts are often irrevocable and once online, very difficult to remove,” the Force warned, stressing that hateful online behaviour reflects levels of intolerance that would not be openly displayed in person.

Members of the public are encouraged to lodge official reports of racist or abusive online content to assist investigations. Police say successful prosecutions will serve as an effective deterrent.
