In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

His election by the 133 cardinal electors was announced on Thursday, May 8, following the conclusion of the conclave in the Sistine Chapel.

Stepping onto the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica for the first time as pontiff, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square and millions watching around the world.

In his first Urbi et Orbi blessing, he invoked a message of peace and reconciliation, pledging to work for a united Church, faithful to Jesus and to the Gospel.

“May peace be upon this world we share,” Pope Leo XIV declared, calling on believers to walk together in hope and compassion. “I will strive to be a shepherd for all, building bridges and not walls.”

Pope Leo XIV, originally from the United States, previously served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. Known for his pastoral care, humility, and commitment to Church reform, his election is seen as a moment of both continuity and renewed energy for the global Church.

The crowd in St. Peter’s Square erupted in applause and celebration as bells rang across Rome to mark the beginning of a new papacy. Many are now looking to Pope Leo XIV for guidance in navigating the spiritual and moral challenges facing the world today.
