Prasad Accuses Narube of Attempting to Sabotage Fiji’s Economy
FIJI NEWS

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has strongly criticized Unity Fiji Leader, Savenaca Narube, for suggesting that Australia should review its budget support to Fiji, calling it an attempt to sabotage the country’s economy.
Prasad dismissed Narube’s claims that the coalition government is misusing Australian funds as baseless and misleading.
He said Narube’s remarks at the Climate Integrity Conference 2025 in Canberra, where he questioned the government’s use of funding for COP 29, were an example of his political agenda.
The Finance Minister clarified that Fiji’s delegation to COP 29 comprised 56 members, not 100 as claimed by Narube.
He explained that 91% of the $1.2 million cost was covered by external funding, with the government only financing five delegates, including opposition members.
He also emphasized that multiple donor agencies and NGOs contributed, not just Australia.
Prasad accused Narube of spreading misinformation and acting as a “mouthpiece” for critics of the coalition government.
He pointed out that Narube did not raise concerns when the previous government sent nearly 80 delegates to COP 23 or when over $4 million was spent on public relations for Fiji’s participation.
He further stated that Narube’s comments insult not only the Fijian government but also Australia and its taxpayers, who continue to support Fiji’s development.
He assured that budget support agreements come with strict conditions and accountability measures, rejecting the idea that funds are mismanaged.
Prasad concluded by saying that Narube’s statements will not boost his political standing and that making unpatriotic remarks overseas only damages Fiji’s reputation.
