National Federation Party (NFP) Leader Professor Biman Prasad has welcomed Prime Minister Rabuka's response to the global fuel crisis, describing it as a disciplined and forward-looking approach made possible by prudent financial management.

Professor Prasad said the ability to redeploy $56 million from within the existing budget demonstrates the strength of earlier fiscal planning and the importance of maintaining responsible economic policies, which have been in place since the inception of the People's Coalition.

“This ability to redeploy $56 million is not something that can be overlooked: it is a clear demonstration of the disciplined fiscal policies put in place by the coalition government, which now gives us the flexibility and manoeuvrability to respond decisively in times of global crisis,” he said.

Professor Prasad acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly the disruption to shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, has driven significant increases in global fuel prices, placing pressure on households and businesses not only in Fiji but around the world.

He said while some of these external shocks are unavoidable, the government's response is designed to cushion their impact by protecting the broader economy, keeping essential services running, and ensuring that the most vulnerable Fijians are supported.

“At times like this, it becomes clear why maintaining critical government revenue streams is important. These are the very resources that allow government to step in and support public transport, stabilise electricity supply, and ensure that people can continue to move, work, and remain productive.”

Professor Prasad said the focus must remain on stability and collective responsibility, rather than division.

“This is not a challenge Fiji faces alone. It is a global issue, and our response must be measured, disciplined, and united. Fighting among ourselves will not solve the problem; working together will.”

He added that the government's approach strikes the right balance between immediate relief and long-term economic stability, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most while safeguarding the country’s financial position.
