“Prefect Badge Is Not an Accessory, It Is a Responsibility” — Tabuya

Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya has urged student leaders to view their roles as a call to serve others, telling students at Ratu Latianara College that leadership goes beyond wearing a badge.
Speaking at the school’s Prefects’ Induction Ceremony in Serua yesterday, Tabuya said the prefect’s badge represents responsibility, service and commitment rather than status.
A total of 58 student leaders were badged during the ceremony.
Tabuya said the badge symbolises the confidence of teachers, the respect of peers and the core values of the school.
“When that badge is pinned on your uniform, close to your heart, it is not by chance. It is a reminder that service, dedication and commitment must always remain close to your heart,” she said.
She urged prefects to treat others fairly, stand up for what is right and guide fellow students through positive leadership. The Minister also encouraged student leaders to use their authority with kindness and help end bullying by leading through example.
During her address, Tabuya also highlighted the growing impact of littering on communities and the environment, describing it as a major national concern. She said small acts of carelessness, such as throwing rubbish on the ground, contribute to pollution, blocked drains and harm to wildlife.
The Minister called on students to take pride in protecting Fiji’s environment and to adopt responsible habits such as proper waste disposal.
She also acknowledged that leadership comes with challenges but encouraged students to use their roles to create positive change within their schools and communities.
Tabuya further commended Ratu Latianara College for achieving more than a 90 percent pass rate in the Year 12 and Year 13 external examinations.
