President Calls for Unity, Responsible Leadership and Inclusive Growth

The President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has called for national unity, responsible leadership and inclusive development while officiating at the State Opening of Parliament, outlining Government’s legislative and policy priorities for the year ahead.

The President inspected a 100-strong Guard of Honour mounted by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces before delivering his address, which reflected on Fiji’s constitutional and democratic journey and the importance of safeguarding democracy through dialogue, compromise and respect for the rule of law.

He acknowledged the nation’s progress since the Deed of Cession and Independence, but emphasised that democracy must be actively sustained by both leaders and citizens.

“As we move toward an election year, leaders carry an even greater responsibility. The strength of our democracy lies not only in the ballot, but in the conduct of leaders and citizens alike,” President Lalabalavu said.

The President also confirmed that Government has begun a review of the Constitution, describing the supreme law as a living document that must evolve to reflect the aspirations and lived realities of the people.

He assured that the review process would be guided by democratic constitutionalism, transparency and meaningful public participation, with the Constitution Amendment Bill to undergo extensive public consultation before being considered by Cabinet and Parliament.

President Lalabalavu further encouraged national leaders, both within and outside Parliament, to participate in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission process.

He urged those who experienced the turbulent events of 1987, 2000 and 2006, and their aftermath, to share their experiences either publicly or privately, noting that their participation would contribute to truth, reconciliation and lasting social cohesion.

He said the Commission’s findings and recommendations should be approached with maturity to guide practical measures that strengthen reconciliation and institutional learning, adding that Government would continue initiatives aimed at fostering unity, inclusivity and mutual understanding across all communities.

In concluding his address, the President called for renewed commitment to unity in diversity, sustainability and integrity in public leadership, outlining a vision for a confident, inclusive and resilient Fiji that honours its history while preparing for future challenges.
