Prime Minister Rabuka Meets New Indian High Commissioner

Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, welcomed the newly appointed High Commissioner of India to Fiji, His Excellency Suneet Mehta, during a courtesy call at his office this afternoon.

The meeting served as a platform to discuss strengthening bilateral relations between Fiji and India, with a focus on economic cooperation, sustainable development, and cultural exchange.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration in key sectors such as healthcare, renewable energy, information technology, skills development, and agriculture.

Prime Minister Rabuka congratulated High Commissioner Mehta on his new diplomatic role and reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to deepening ties with India.

He acknowledged the 55 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations and expressed gratitude for India’s ongoing support in Fiji’s development efforts.

One of the key topics of discussion was India’s assistance in the construction of a 100-bed Super Speciality Hospital in Fiji, a major initiative announced by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) III Summit in 2023.

The project, one of the most significant in the Pacific region, is progressing steadily and is expected to improve healthcare services for Fijians and the wider Pacific community.

High Commissioner Mehta highlighted the strong foundation of India-Fiji relations and expressed confidence in expanding collaboration across various sectors.

He reaffirmed India’s commitment to aligning its development assistance with Fiji’s national priorities, ensuring continued progress in the partnership.
