FIJI NEWS

Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday visited the Yokohama Port and the Keihin Koyasu Shipyard in Japan as part of efforts to strengthen Fiji’s maritime sector and explore deeper collaboration in shipbuilding and port development.
During the visit, Prime Minister Rabuka commended Japan’s global leadership in maritime engineering, shipbuilding excellence, and sustainable port management.
He noted that Yokohama Port stands as a model of efficiency, resilience, and forward-looking infrastructure—qualities Fiji aims to emulate as the country undertakes major upgrades to its maritime services.
Port executives briefed the Prime Minister on Yokohama’s disaster-resilient infrastructure, green port initiatives, and advanced vessel construction technologies. These insights will help guide Fiji’s efforts to build a stronger domestic shipbuilding industry, capable of producing safer inter-island vessels, supporting blue-economy growth, and enhancing Fiji’s position as a regional maritime hub.
At the Keihin Koyasu Shipyard, the Prime Minister was updated on the shipyard’s operations and explored potential areas for cooperation. The facility is one of Japan’s well-established maritime centres, known for its expertise in vessel construction, maintenance, and advanced marine engineering.
The visit reaffirms the strong partnership between Fiji and Japan as both countries pursue greater collaboration in maritime infrastructure, economic resilience, and Pacific connectivity.
