Prioritise Workplace Safety During Cyclone Conditions
FIJI NEWS

The Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Mr Jone Maritino Nemani, is urging all employers and workers across Fiji to prioritise safety as adverse weather associated with the current cyclone continues to affect the country.
Nemani said that while businesses may aim to continue operations, no worker should be placed in unsafe conditions.
“Safety must always come first, particularly during severe weather conditions. No job or deadline is more important than the well-being of our workers, and employers must ensure that no one is placed in harm’s way,” said Nemani.
“Employers must take reasonable steps to identify hazards such as flooding, strong winds, reduced visibility and unsafe access routes, and suspend operations where necessary to ensure that workers are not exposed to unnecessary risk,” Nemani said.
The Permanent Secretary also reminded workers of their responsibility to take reasonable care for their own safety and that of others.
“If conditions are unsafe, workers should raise concerns immediately through their supervisors or workplace health and safety committees. They must also consider their own safety, as well as the safety of their families, including children and dependants, when making decisions during this period,” he said.
Mr Nemani encouraged flexible arrangements during this period, based on common sense and good judgment, to protect workers and ensure their safety and well-being during the current conditions.
“No task is worth risking a life. We must all act with care, show understanding, and prioritise safety at all times."
