Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has condemned in the strongest terms the vandalism at the Sanatan Shiv Mandir in Samabula, calling it a shocking attack on Fiji’s fundamental values of respect, peace, and religious freedom.

Prof. Prasad said the deliberate destruction of sacred idols—some over a century old—was not only an act of sacrilege but also a blow to the heart of the nation’s multicultural society.

“This is not just an attack on the Hindu community. It is an attack on all of us as Fijians who value harmony and respect between all faiths and cultures,” he said.

He called on law enforcement to ensure swift justice and for all communities to stand united against hatred and violence.

Prof. Prasad also urged Fijians to reject attempts by anyone to divide the nation along religious or ethnic lines.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing, with a suspect already in custody.
