Proposed Fijians First Hits Back at Mahendra Chaudhry’s Remarks

The newly proposed political party, Fijians First, has issued a strong response to comments made by Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry, describing them as “disappointing and unwarranted.”
In a public statement, Fijians First spokesperson Ratu Sailosi Sirisirivalu said the group was formed by “young, aspiring leaders” who wish to engage in national politics based on the principles of equality, meritocracy, and a vision for a better Fiji.
“Contrary to Mr. Chaudhry’s implications, the former FijiFirst leadership is not currently affiliated with this initiative,” Sirisirivalu clarified.
He expressed dismay at what he described as an attempt by the veteran politician to “undermine the democratic rights of young Fijians.”
“It is disheartening to see a senior political figure attempt to discourage the participation of youth in shaping the future of our country. Such remarks appear to be a deliberate attempt to influence authorities and deprive others of a fair opportunity to contest,” he said.
Sirisirivalu urged Mr. Chaudhry to “focus on his own political journey” and to compete based on merit, rather than by “seeking to disqualify others through backdoor tactics.”
“Elections should be won through ideas and public trust,” he said, reaffirming that FijiansFirst remains committed to democratic values and empowering the next generation of leaders.
The response comes after Mr. Chaudhry questioned the legitimacy and origins of the Fijians First application, drawing attention due to its similarity to the now-deregistered FijiFirst party.
