The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has reminded employers to follow the law when paying workers during the Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day public holidays.

The Minister said workers who do not work on a public holiday are entitled to be paid their normal single rate for the hours they would usually work on that day.

He explained that workers who are required to work on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day must be paid double their normal rate.

Minister Singh also clarified that workers who do not work on a public holiday must have worked their normal working day immediately before and after the holiday to qualify for public holiday pay. If a worker is unable to work on either of those days, they must provide a valid reason or medical certificate.

He said it is important for both employers and workers to clearly understand public holiday pay rules to avoid disputes and ensure fair treatment in the workplace.

As the festive season approaches, the Minister urged employers to meet their legal obligations and encouraged workers to be aware of their rights.

Minister Singh also extended Christmas and New Year wishes to workers, employers and their families across Fiji, wishing everyone a safe, peaceful and joyful festive season.
