Ra Maternity Hospital has celebrated its 55th anniversary, marking more than half a century of service to mothers across the province and beyond.

Once delivering around 10 babies a month, the hospital now averages between 15 and 20 births, with mothers travelling from as far as Wainibuka, Tokaimalo, Nailuva, Navuni’ivi and Namuaimadi to give birth at the facility. Former long-serving midwife Kinisimere Senikuta said the hospital’s growing reputation has made it the preferred choice for many rural families.

Senikuta, who served for 16 years, said the hospital does more than provide medical care—mothers receive gowns, baby clothes, wipes, diapers and other essentials at no extra cost. She also highlighted the hospital’s remarkable safety record.

“In the past 16 years, no baby died before or after birth, and no mother died either. It shows that the hospital is really performing,” she said.

Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer Colleen Wilson said the institution has grown from a small 7-bed unit established by the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary in 1970 into a respected maternity centre serving women of all ethnic backgrounds. The hospital has also received the “Baby Friendly Hospital” award for its quality of care.

Wilson challenged stakeholders to plan for the hospital’s expansion, noting the long distances between health centres in Ra.

“We have reached 55 years of service – but will we still continue to operate as a small unit, or is there a plan to expand into a big unit?” she asked.

Relief Charge Nurse Isoa Natui said recent improvements have strengthened public confidence. He also acknowledged the hospital’s unique partnership between the Catholic Church and the Ministry of Health, which has supported the facility’s growth for decades.

“With our close liaison, we’ll be able to reach another 55 years,” he said.

The hospital has survived major challenges, including severe damage during Tropical Cyclone Winston, but its staff say resilience and community support have helped it continue to thrive.

As discussions begin on expanding services, Ra Maternity Hospital’s success stands as a model for sustainable rural healthcare—built on partnership, commitment and generations of newborns delivered safely.
