Radrodro Denounces Temple Attack

Minister for Education and SODELPA Party Leader Aseri Radrodro has strongly condemned the attack on the Sanatan Shiv Mandir in Samabula, calling it a “deeply disturbing and unacceptable act” that threatens Fiji’s hard-earned religious and cultural harmony.
In a public statement following the incident, Radrodro said the actions — allegedly carried out by youths — bring sorrow to the entire nation and must be addressed swiftly and decisively by law enforcement.
“It is with great sadness that we note the uncalled-for acts of the youth who attacked the Shiv Mandir,” Radrodro said. “Such criminal activity must be denounced and dealt with urgently by the necessary authorities.”
The Minister also made an impassioned call to parents, guardians, and community leaders to guide young people in respecting the rights of others, particularly the right to freedom of religion.
“I urge all parents and guardians to teach our youths to respect the constitutional and universal rights of every person to choose their religion and to coexist in peaceful harmony,” he said.
Radrodro, speaking as a Christian, said he was personally distressed by the incident and its potential to reignite division among communities.
“As a Christian, I am deeply saddened that someone chose to carry out such an act — one that immediately impacts race relations across Fiji. Because of the poor decisions of a few, we are once again forced to confront threats to the safety and security of all races and religions in this country.”
He emphasized that all major faiths — including Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism — are rooted in messages of love, compassion, and unity.
“Christ teaches us to love and to be tolerant of one another. Likewise, the teachings of other religions speak to the universal power of love, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence,” Radrodro said.
“In a world already so divided, we do not need any senseless act like this to threaten the peace we’ve worked so hard to build in Fiji.”
The Minister appealed to teachers, parents, and faith-based communities to reinforce the importance of national unity and understanding among youth.
“We are at a crossroads. We can either grow from this, or risk losing the values that hold us together as a nation. Let us rebuild Fiji — quickly and steadily — starting with trust and care for one another.”
Radrodro also extended his sympathies to the Hindu community affected by the desecration of the temple.
“To our brothers and sisters at the Samabula Mandir, I send you love and prayers for peace and unity. We mourn with you over the damage done and the violation of your sacred space. We hope you find healing and renewed strength in the days to come.”
He concluded with a prayer for the nation: “May God bless us all, and may His divine leadership guide Fiji toward a future of greater peace, unity, and respect.”
