The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has issued a formal correction to its earlier statement regarding the death of Mr Jone Vakarisi, acknowledging that the initial information provided to the public did not fully reflect the medical findings.

In a press release dated April 20, the RFMF stated that its earlier description of the incident as a “medical emergency” was inaccurate based on the post-mortem report now available.

The RFMF said the updated findings highlight the seriousness of the matter, which is currently under active investigation by the Fiji Police Force. As a result, the military noted it would be inappropriate to comment further on specific details at this stage.

The force reaffirmed its full cooperation with police, stating that it is committed to ensuring that all facts are established in a thorough, independent, and transparent manner.

“The RFMF remains committed to accountability. Where wrongdoing is established, it will be addressed in accordance with the law,” the statement said.

It also extended condolences to the family of the late Mr Vakarisi during what it described as a difficult time.

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces indicated that further updates will be provided following the conclusion of the investigation.

The Fiji Police Force meanwhile, is investigating the matter as an alleged murder.
