Rising Chicken Prices During Festive Season

Market surveillance conducted by the Consumer Council of Fiji revealed significant price hikes due to the high demand for chicken during this festive season.
The surveillance found alarming markups on popular frozen chicken sizes, with retail prices surpassing wholesale prices by considerable margins.
Number 16 chicken is being sold for up to $21, reflecting an 18% markup, while Number 19 chicken is priced as high as $25.50, also with an 18% margin. Number 21 chicken reaches up to $28.50, showing a 20% markup.
The Consumer Council of Fiji has strongly urged supermarkets to use fair pricing strategies that do not exploit customers.
The Council emphasized that free market economies should not come at the expense of publics well-bring and their ability to access essential food items.
