Rural Taveuni residents gain new skills to improve employment prospects

More than 100 people from rural communities across Taveuni are now better equipped to pursue employment and income-generating opportunities after completing employability and vocational skills training delivered directly in their villages.

The training, conducted in Somosomo, Naselesele, Togo and Vuna, was made possible through a partnership between Fiji's Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, the National Employment Centre (NEC) and Pacific Australia Skills, with support from the Australian Government.

Rather than requiring participants to travel to larger towns or the mainland for training, the programme was brought directly to their communities, helping remove one of the biggest barriers faced by many rural Fijians.

Participants received practical instruction in digital literacy, communication skills, agriculture, wall and floor tiling, house construction and meatworks, providing them with skills that can open doors to employment both locally and overseas.

For many graduates, the programme represents more than just a certificate. It offers a pathway to greater financial independence, stronger livelihoods and new opportunities for themselves and their families.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Jone Maritino Nemani, encouraged participants to make the most of what they had learned.

"From where you started to where you are now, this skills training has taught you practical skills that will make it much easier for you when you enter the workforce," he said.

"The training delivered by Pacific Australia Skills and our Ministry has prepared you well. Make good use of what you have learned to secure employment, as this programme is designed to equip you with both life skills and employability skills."

Pacific Australia Skills Country Director Gareth McGrath said talent exists in every community and opportunities should not be determined by geography.

"By investing in local community members, we help strengthen local economies and create brighter futures for all Fijians," he said.

The initiative forms part of the ongoing partnership between Fiji and Australia to expand access to quality skills training, particularly in rural and maritime communities, ensuring more Fijians are equipped with the skills needed for the evolving labour market.
