Safeguards Exist to Protect Fijian PALM Workers

Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has reaffirmed the Fiji Government’s commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of Fijian workers under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.
Mr Singh said the Fiji Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations has maintained continuous engagement with workers, approved employers, and the Australian Government to ensure fair treatment and safe working conditions.
“We are proud of the progress made so far. Through ongoing dialogue and cooperation with Australian-approved employers, we have addressed many concerns and will continue to work on rectifying the remaining issues,” Mr Singh said.
The minister led a team that visited all Australian states between late October and mid-November, meeting Fijian workers and employers. He said most employers showed strong commitment to fair and transparent practices, while workers expressed appreciation for the support they received from both governments.
“The welfare of our workers is our top priority,” he said. “With safeguards and support from both the Fijian and Australian governments, there have been marked improvements in most workplaces. Workers are saving well and returning home with new skills that strengthen their communities.”
Mr Singh said Fiji now had three Country Liaison Officers based in Australia to provide faster assistance to workers across 496 job sites nationwide.
He also reminded the public that any issues or complaints about the PALM scheme should be directed to the Ministry of Employment for timely and accurate handling.
Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa had earlier raised concerns about the treatment of some Fijian seasonal workers in Australia, claiming some were being treated like “Girmitiyas” and faced challenges such as discrimination, delayed pay, and unclear contracts.
The Assistant Minister's comments faced a huge backlash both for comparing the PALM workers conditions to Girmitiyas and for taking an overseas trip during a crisis at the CWM Hospital.
