A tragic road accident in Savusavu has claimed the life of a 46-year-old farmer from Vivili village, making him Fiji's first road fatality of the year.
The incident happened this morning along Naidi, Buca Bay Road. A vehicle lost control, veered off the road, and struck the farmer as he was walking. He died on the spot.
The Director of Traffic Control, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, expressed sadness over the incident.
“This is tragic, especially as schools reopen tomorrow. Drivers must be mindful of the thousands of students who will be using the roads,” SSP Divuana said.
He also reminded everyone, including bus passengers, taxi riders, and pedestrians, to prioritize safety and be cautious while on the road.
The driver involved in the accident is now in police custody as investigations continue.
Police are urging all road users to remain vigilant and to help prevent further tragedies as road activity increases with the start of the school year.
