The government's decision to remove the school zoning policy, which was meant to give families more "freedom of choice," has caused major issues in the education system. Instead of improving things, the move has led to unfair treatment and confusion for both parents and students.

In January 2023, Education Minister Aseri Radrodro argued that the zoning policy was a burden on families.

However, he now admits receiving complaints about unfair school enrollment practices.

Some students have even been sent home from school after only attending for a few days.

While the minister promised that families would have more freedom to choose schools, the reality has been different. Parents are now struggling to find available spots in schools and are forced to travel from one school to another.

Meanwhile, families with connections seem to have an easier time getting their children into top schools.

Another problem is the cost of transportation. While the minister promised that transportation help would continue, many parents are still paying for expensive travel to distant schools.

This added cost has led to increased absenteeism and truancy, which harms the education of vulnerable children.

Now, with the zoning policy gone, many families are left struggling. If the government truly cares about education, they must urgently consider bringing back the zoning policy to ensure fairness for all students.
