The Leader of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), Hon. Aseri Radrodro, has praised the recent Supreme Court advisory opinion that reaffirms the 2013 Constitution as Fiji’s supreme law while outlining a clear democratic process for any future amendments.
The Supreme Court ruled that amendments to the Constitution require a two-thirds majority approval from Members of Parliament, followed by a simple majority in a national referendum. This decision establishes a transparent and inclusive pathway for constitutional changes, ensuring the voices of Fijians are central to the process.
“This landmark opinion is a victory for democracy and for all Fijians,” Hon. Radrodro stated. “For too long, the 2013 Constitution was seen as rigid and imposed. The Court’s ruling now provides a democratic and inclusive mechanism for the people to shape the supreme law of our nation.”
Hon. Radrodro highlighted the significance of the ruling in empowering Fijians:
- The 2013 Constitution remains in force, safeguarding citizens’ rights and freedoms.
- Parliament is entrusted with a high threshold of a two-thirds majority to propose amendments.
- A national referendum ensures that the people have the final say on constitutional changes.
“SODELPA has always championed democracy, the rule of law, and the right of the people to determine their future,” said Hon. Radrodro. “This ruling paves the way for greater consultation, unity, and nation-building as we move forward together as one Fiji.”
The SODELPA leader also commended the Coalition Government for seeking the Supreme Court’s guidance rather than pursuing unilateral changes, describing the move as a sign of maturity and respect for due process.
“This is a moment to move forward with humility and confidence, knowing that our democracy is maturing,” Hon. Radrodro concluded. “The people now have a voice, and their voice must always be respected.”
