The Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) has firmly rejected any proposal to increase electricity tariffs in Fiji, warning that such a move would place an unacceptable burden on struggling households.

In a statement today, SODELPA’s Indian Wing President, Mr. Hazarat Ali, stressed the party’s “unwavering position” against rising electricity costs, noting that this marks the second proposal for tariff hikes within four years.

"Electricity is not a luxury—it is a basic necessity," Mr. Ali said. "Any move to increase its cost will disproportionately burden low-income families, small businesses, and rural communities already grappling with inflation and stagnant wages."

SODELPA called for the Government and the Fiji Commerce Commission to conduct wide public consultations and impact assessments before considering any changes to electricity tariffs. The party emphasized that efforts should instead focus on improving the Fiji Electricity Authority’s infrastructure, investing in renewable energy, and addressing operational inefficiencies without passing costs onto consumers.

The party also reminded coalition partners to uphold the spirit of their agreement to prioritise the needs of Fijian families over institutional shortcomings.

"We will not stand by while our families, workers, and communities are made to carry the cost of incompetence," the statement concluded, pledging that SODELPA will continue to advocate fiercely for the welfare of ordinary Fijians.

The statement was authorised by SODELPA’s General Secretary, Viliame Waka Takayawa.
