Successful AFAS Training Strengthens Fiji’s Biosecurity Standards
FIJI NEWS

The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has successfully completed a one-week training under the Australian Fumigation Accreditation Scheme (AFAS), reinforcing the country’s commitment to international biosecurity standards.
Held at Trans International Hotel in Nadi, the training saw 24 participants, including BAF officers and fumigation treatment providers, accredited under the AFAS methodology.
This initiative enhances Fiji’s ability to regulate and oversee fumigation treatments, ensuring compliance with global biosecurity protocols.
The AFAS program, introduced in Fiji in 2012, was fully implemented by 2015 and has since played a crucial role in standardizing Methyl Bromide (CH₃Br) fumigation treatments.
In collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and PHAMA, BAF has trained and accredited 397 personnel across the Pacific, including biosecurity officers and treatment providers.
This latest training is another milestone in strengthening Fiji’s biosecurity capabilities and maintaining its standing in international trade and agricultural protection.
