FIJI NEWS

The Ministry of Justice has confirmed the death of an inmate at the Naboro Maximum Corrections Centre, following an incident on the evening of Sunday, 18 May 2025.
According to a preliminary report from the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), the inmate was housed alone in a single cell at the time of the incident. Authorities were immediately alerted, and the Fiji Police Force, including its Forensics Unit, responded to the scene alongside the Resident Magistrate and a medical officer.
Both an internal board of inquiry by the FCS and an independent investigation by the Fiji Police are now underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death.
The Ministry stated that funeral arrangements are being handled in consultation with the deceased’s family.
In a statement, the Ministry acknowledged the gravity of the matter, affirming its support for the ongoing investigations and commitment to full transparency and accountability. A final report will be submitted to the Ministry upon the conclusion of the inquiries.
“Suicide is complex and is rarely caused by a single event or factor. Often, it results from the interaction of multiple personal, social, and environmental influences,” the Ministry noted. It also reaffirmed its partnership with the FCS to ensure proper support mechanisms are in place within correctional facilities.
The Ministry of Justice emphasized its ongoing commitment to justice, fairness, and compassion, particularly in upholding the welfare of those in its care.
