Taveuni Farmers Demand Action Against Rising Yaqona Theft
FIJI NEWS

Yaqona farmers in Taveuni are raising concerns over increasing thefts, with claims that up to 7,000 yaqona plants were stolen within just a few months last year.
Villagers are calling for urgent government intervention and stronger police action to address the issue, which they say is severely impacting their livelihoods.
During a visit to Taveuni, Hon. Jone Usamate revealed alarming reports of organized theft.
Villagers explained that thieves use communication tools like text messages and Viber to coordinate thefts when farmers are away.
Stolen yaqona is reportedly cleaned, dried, and even transported to Vanua Levu to avoid detection.
Concerns about alleged police corruption have further fueled frustration.
Some villagers claim that certain officers may be colluding with thieves and buyers, undermining trust in law enforcement.
Delayed police responses have only worsened the situation, with reports of information provided in May 2024 being acted upon seven months later.
