Termite Infestation in Western Division
FIJI NEWS

The issue of termite infestation has escalated into a significant concern for residents of Fiji, particularly in the Western Division.
Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, who also co-chairs the Termite Taskforce Committee, has reported that the Asian subterranean termite species has spread extensively across the country, from Lautoka to Labasa in Vanua Levu.
Kiran adds that Lautoka is currently experiencing severe infestation, with Nadi also facing serious issues.
Other areas affected include parts of Ba, Rakiraki, Tavua, Nakasi, and Labasa.
The widespread problem has led to a notable decline in property prices in Lautoka, as many homes are now impacted by termite damage.
The Fiji government has allocated $3 million in the national budget to address the termite problem.
As part of their action plan, a pilot study will be conducted in Lautoka, involving 1,000 houses that will utilize bait systems to combat the infestation.
Kiran highlighted the collaborative efforts to tackle this issue, stating that they have been reaching out to Queensland, Australia, where termite infestations are similarly problematic, to learn best practices for effective management.
With the growing threat of termites affecting both the structural integrity of homes and local property values, officials are hopeful that these initiatives will provide relief to affected communities and help prevent further spread of this invasive species.
