Thousands of Fijians in Vanua Levu now have access to high-speed internet following the launch of Telecom Fiji’s Fiber Optic Extension project.

The $5 million project, launched this morning, is set to significantly boost Fiji’s digital infrastructure, fostering economic growth and improving access to education, healthcare, and business opportunities across the Northern Division.

Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister and Minister for Public Enterprises Sitiveni Rabuka said the project marks a milestone in improving communication connectivity, which is vital for development and disaster resilience.

“The ceremony marks a milestone for the people of Vanua Levu and Fiji’s backbone network capacity provider – Telecom, in reinforcing high-speed, resilient, and scalable connectivity between Savusavu and Labasa,” Rabuka said. “It is a giant leap forward for Fiji in our shared aspirations for a more connected and prosperous future.”

The project is part of Telecom Fiji’s five-year fiber investment plan. It includes two phases: the first covering the fiber route from Labasa to Seaqaqa, and the second phase extending from Seaqaqa to Savusavu, connecting to the Savusavu Cable Landing Station.

Prime Minister Rabuka commended Telecom Fiji and its partners for their collaboration in delivering the critical infrastructure.

He also encouraged Fijians to use digital connectivity responsibly to support the country’s growth and prosperity.

“This project underscores the Coalition Government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that even our most remote communities have access to the opportunities that digital connectivity provides,” Rabuka added.
