Three young men from Labasa have been charged with the murder of a 68-year-old man from Wainikoro, Labasa.

Police received a report on January 23, 2025, that the elderly man was found dead just two meters from his home.

The victim, known in the area for begging and carrying a box of coins, was reportedly attacked and robbed of his money.

Investigations led police to a youth who used loose coins to buy liquor from a nearby shop.

This tipped off officers, resulting in the arrest of the 20-year-old and his two accomplices, both aged 22.

It was revealed during questioning that the three assaulted the elderly man and stole his money to purchase alcohol.

All three have been charged with one count each of murder under Section 237(a)(b)(c) of the Crimes Act 2009.

They are expected to appear in custody at the Labasa Magistrate Court today.

Police continue to remind the public of the serious consequences of such violent crimes and encourage communities to come forward with any information that can help in solving similar cases.
