Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua visited Position 22—one of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force’s (UNDOF) permanently manned outposts near the Syrian border in the Golan Heights—where he inspected facilities and engaged directly with Fijian peacekeepers.

In a post on Facebook, Tikoduadua described the post as “quiet, but critical,” noting the challenging conditions faced by personnel stationed there, including basic living conditions, isolation, and constant work.

“I spent time inspecting their living quarters and speaking with the personnel about the challenges they face. They were honest and professional—clear about what’s working and where improvements are needed,” he wrote. A key concern raised by troops was the need for better equipment and logistical support, which the Minister said he would follow up on back in Fiji.

At Camp Ziouani, he also witnessed a Readiness Demonstration by the contingent and later held further discussions with troops about rebuilding a culture of mentorship and addressing structural barriers to gender inclusion within peacekeeping forces.

“The issue isn’t skill—it’s structural. Our job is to make sure the system gives everyone a fair chance to serve,” he said.

Tikoduadua expressed gratitude to the Fijian troops for their service and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting them in their mission.
