The controversy between Toko tenants and the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) over 999-year leases has significant implications for leaseholders and freehold landowners in Fiji, according to Labour Leader Mahendra Chaudhry.

He warns that forced changes to lease conditions could undermine investor confidence, deter agricultural investment, and hinder business expansion.

The dispute began when TLTB demanded that tenants surrender their 999-year leases in exchange for 99-year leases. The tenants have engaged a lawyer and plan to challenge the demand in court.

Chaudhry, who is also the general secretary of the National Farmers Union, advised tenants to remain calm and united in their legal fight against the changes.

Chaudhry expressed sadness over the decline of once-productive cane land in Toko and Tavua, which has reverted to bush due to non-renewal of leases.

He also highlighted the deteriorating state of Tavua, including dysfunctional council services, dilapidated market conditions, and poorly maintained roads and footpaths.

The Tavua hospital is in urgent need of maintenance, with deplorable toilet conditions and only three of six mortuary slots functioning.

The dispensary is critically short of medicines and other supplies, forcing residents to buy from pharmacies.

Due to an influx of dengue fever patients, part of the maternity unit is being used to accommodate male patients.

Chaudhry emphasized the importance of addressing these issues through legal channels and urged tenants to stay united in their pursuit of justice.
