Transport Operators Warned Against Unfair Fare Hikes After Fuel Price Increase
FIJI NEWS

The Consumer Council of Fiji is urging transport operators across the country to act responsibly and follow the law following the latest fuel price increases.
In a statement, the Council said while it understands the pressure placed on businesses by rising fuel costs, this does not justify unauthorised or excessive fare increases.
Diesel prices have risen by 35 per cent to $2.89 per litre, while unleaded fuel has increased by 20 per cent to $2.93 per litre, placing immediate strain on transport and maritime operators.
However, the Council revealed it has already received reports of arbitrary fare increases affecting the public.
One case involved a minibus operator on the Lautoka–Sigatoka route increasing fares to $15, an unauthorised rise of nearly $3 per passenger.
There are also concerns that some maritime operators are planning to raise ticket prices by as much as $10 without approval.
Chief Executive Officer Seema Shandil said businesses must act fairly despite rising costs.
“We understand that businesses are under pressure. However, it is not fair to pass these costs onto consumers through excessive increases,” she said.
The Council stressed that any fare changes must go through proper regulatory processes involving the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Land Transport Authority.
It also warned operators against disguising fuel-related charges as “surcharges” or “service fees”, saying such practices could be misleading and unlawful.
Consumers are being advised to remain vigilant and report any unauthorised fare increases, including details such as vehicle registration, route and operator name.
Complaints can be lodged through the Council’s toll-free line 155 or via email.
