US President Donald Trump has signed a massive $142 billion (£107 billion) defence agreement with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in what Washington describes as “the largest defence sales agreement in history.”

The deal was inked during Trump’s high-profile visit to Riyadh — the first leg of a four-day diplomatic tour of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE — marking a major moment in the recalibration of US-Saudi ties.

During a speech in the Saudi capital, Trump hailed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as “an incredible man,” adding that the US-Saudi bond is now “more powerful than ever.”

“We are not just allies — we are partners in shaping a new era of prosperity, peace, and strength in the region,” Trump said.

In a surprise announcement, the US president also declared that he is lifting sanctions on Syria, a move that drew immediate reaction on the ground. BBC correspondent Lina Sinjab reported hearing celebratory gunfire in Damascus shortly after the announcement.

“Syria deserves a chance at greatness,” Trump said. “We are removing the barriers that have held its people back for far too long.”

The president also took aim at Iran, saying he is open to negotiating a new deal but warned that rejection would result in “massive, maximum pressure.”

“We extend an olive branch — but make no mistake, we are prepared to act if that branch is snapped,” he warned.

On the ongoing war in Gaza, Trump struck a more humanitarian tone, saying the civilian population “deserve a much better future.” The remarks came as news broke of an Israeli airstrike on a hospital in Khan Younis, which reportedly killed at least 16 people and injured dozens.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman offered brief remarks, emphasizing the strength of the US-Saudi partnership.

“We share deep economic relations with the United States,” the Crown Prince said. “And together, we will continue to build.”

The visit also saw tech entrepreneur Elon Musk joining Trump for parts of the program, while dozens of people queued for a chance to meet the US president in Riyadh.

In lighter moments captured on video, Trump appeared to decline an offered drink during a reception and received a ceremonial welcome on arrival.

The diplomatic tour continues with stops in Doha and Abu Dhabi, where regional security and energy cooperation are expected to top the agenda.
