Two years after a tragic ferris wheel accident claimed the life of a young woman and critically injured two others during the 2023 Communications Fiji Ltd Showcase, no report has been made public — and no one has been held accountable.

Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has described the situation as “absolutely shocking,” raising serious concerns over possible bureaucratic negligence or an attempt to shield those responsible.

“The delay is just not acceptable. Is it incompetence, or is someone being protected?” he questioned.

Despite the return of the Showcase event at the Vodafone Arena this evening, the families of the victims continue to suffer without closure or justice.

Authorities have so far offered conflicting updates. The Ministry of Employment claims it submitted its report to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in December 2023. However, the ODPP says it is awaiting the Police report to proceed. Meanwhile, Police have yet to issue a promised statement on the matter.

Chaudhry alleges an “official conspiracy” to suppress the truth and has condemned the continued silence as “appalling.”

“It is disgraceful that a young life can be treated with such contempt. The families’ lawyers are unable to move forward due to the authorities’ refusal to release the investigation report,” he said.

He further asserted that the Ministry of Employment has the authority — and responsibility — to ensure justice is served and compensation delivered. “The final buck stops with Minister Agni Deo Singh. His inaction is deeply concerning, especially when his Ministry holds the power to prosecute,” said Chaudhry.
